detachment
detached protector pitfall is when someone with bpd detaches from their own needs in order to fulfill those of someone else, typically their favorite person but not in every case. see favorite person.
dissociation
a disconnect between one's behaviors, emotions, identity, memories, perceptions, and thoughts depersonalization is a sense of detachment from oneself and one's identity. derealization is when things or people around seem unreal.
idealization
the attribution of exaggerated positive qualities to another person someone who is idealized is also often referred to as a favorite person. see favorite person.
magical thinking
looking for supernatural connections between external events and one’s own actions, thoughts, and words
splitting
the change in perception of someone or something caused by black-or-white thinking¹ or dichotomous thinking² it is the devaluation of someone who was once idealized and vice versa. see idealization & devaluation.

a personality disorder characterized by a long-standing pattern of instability in mood, interpersonal relationships, and self-image borderline personality disorder or emotionally unstable personality disorder at its core is emotional dysregulation, the inability to regulate one's emotional responses.

devaluation
the attribution of exaggerated negative qualities to another person it is usually triggered by the person of interest not meeting the idealized expectations of them. see splitting.
fp or favorite person
a person who is idealized for sporadic durations of time someone with bpd feels incredibly dependent on this person and will put their needs before their own. see idealization.
imprinting
causes an individual to become an object of habitual trust it is a deep emotional attachment that causes someone with bpd to acknowledge someone as their favorite person. see favorite person.
mirroring
the chameleon effect the constant, unconscious change in one's identity or sense of self by imitating another person’s behaviors, characteristics, or traits it is common in people who have a vacant or distorted self-image which is a general symptom of bpd.
